61Bhagalpur is a city, municipal corporation and district in the Bihar state in eastern India. Bhagalpur is situated 93 miles east of Patna. Bhagalpur is one of the oldest districts of Bihar located in the Southern region. Patna may be the capital of Bihar but Bhagalpur is the commercial capital known since its prehistoric times as the “silk city”. Although it is not a well known tourist place of Bihar as Gaya and Rajgir, it does have golden past in archives of Indian history. The city of Bhagalpur is considered as one of the most beautiful cities of India. The language used in Bhagalpur is Angika and Magahi is one of the oldest languages of the World. It was mainly prevalent during the reign of Ashoka in the eastern part of India.
In ancient times it was a silk traffic city situated on the river Ganges. In the present time, Bhagalpur is world famous for its tassar and silk production that is exported worldwide. The city is well known for its sericulture (silk farming) and the manufacture of silk yarn and its weaving. This city has an important railway and is an important commercial centre for the region and also for Bihar.
On its eastern site the next station to Bhagalpur is Kahalgaon and to the west the major station is Luckeesarai Junction (Kiul Junction). Kiul is famous for its “Litti Pani” sold at the railway station. In addition, Bhagalpur is similarly well known for “Visharhi Asthan” the place for the Bihula or the Mansa Puja held in July.
Geographically, Bhagalpur is a town located east of Patna, near the convergence of the Ganges and the BaduaRiver. As the geographical location engages Bhagalpur on the banks of 2 major rivers, sometimes of which the rivers flow above the danger level; however the tendency is nowadays rather limited.
